Powering complex enterprise business data into convenient insights to empower business owners

Overview
Union POS is an enterprise level company providing comprehensive SaaS services for Bars, Restaurants, and Venues around the country. Spurred by internal requests and feedback conducted during research sessions we set out to create a flexible solution to improve Unions current day reporting capabilities.

The Challenge
Current enterprise users did not have an easy way to assess the performance of their business operations at a glance. Unions software worked well for individual venues, but created problems for enterprise users. For clients with multiple locations (many had 10+) Users had to run 10+ reports and then do manual calculations causing many to rely on third party or in house solutions which were difficult to support, prone to error, cumbersome and created significant work for the end user.

The Solution
The solution was to develop a comprehensive design solution building on existing reporting structure within the product. We undertook the process of conducting UX research interviews with business owners and managers to understand their needs. We then designed a solution to maximize end user impact by focusing on a handful of reports to suit the majority of end user needs in the initial release. Scope was determined through conversations with internal heads of development.

The Result
The new dashboard significantly boosted Unions enterprise capabilities and user engagement. The elegant design and functionality improved enterprise workflows by up to 80%, reduced user confusion, and increased user access to powerful data insights. Union saw a 20% increase in enterprise sales and customer satisfaction, establishing the new dashboard as a key asset in their brand’s success.

Key Features
The dashboard contains 2 separate date pickers which allow users to compare specific dates, or ranges and evaluate their business performance. The filter menu next to the dates allows users to restrict the comparison to a specific group of venues within the enterprise. The drop down on the far right of the screen provides users an easy way to access a specific venues dashboard, or easily navigate to the enterprise dashboard. This pattern was overwhelmingly preferred in testing.

User Impact
The work flow was massively simplified from the existing solutions within the product. It increased user performance and efficiency dramatically. This provided strong results for our average enterprise users having 8 locations the amount of clicks to view the necessary data was reduced from 24 to 1.
The previous tool required our users to export each individual locations data to a 3rd party tool or performing manual calculations in order to gain enterprise level insights. This cumbersome requirement was completely negated by the new dashboard implementation of comparison widgets.

Research
User research was conducted via zoom with owners all over the country in New York, Texas, Florida, and Washington. I developed scripts to gather consistent feedback from users and give us good quality data from their responses.
I also designed clickable prototypes in Figma which we used to test screen flows and design hierarchy with users. The research process was in total spread over 3 weeks concurrently with early stage designing.
As we gained insights into the key pieces of data and functionality that would make the most impact possible within the given timeframe and scope of the project, we integrated them into the design process.

User Flows
Here we can see 2 flows outlining the user journey of an enterprise customer. It was important to ensure that the experience was smooth transitioning between the different states of both the dashboard and the individual reports that contained the data referenced in the enterprise widgets.

Wireframes
During the early wire frame stages we set about to establish fundamentals which carried into the final design. The first of which is the global date range picker at the top of the dashboard. This was necessary both because of technical restraints on the backend, and because during user testing over 70% of users expected to pick their dates in this manor and for the entire dashboard to respond at once.
Secondly the pattern of both large and small widgets was established which allowed the dashboard's design language to expand into the future as customers requested more features and the team technical capabilities increased.
The final piece was confirming that going forward each individual widget would contain a specific set of enterprise comparison data allowing users to gain new insights into their business.

Final Designs
Here you can see the final designs and how they fit into the initial vision defined in the wireframing stage. These designs include a top 10 items widget which easily allows owners to determine at a glance what their bets selling items are across their business.
This feature is very useful when running specials or during holidays when unique items may be on offer. The advertisement style widget allows users to quickly stay up to date on the latest offers and specials and allows Union to provide a new avenue to promote its brand partners.
Lastly the large comparison widget allows users to gain detailed insights into the performance of their enterprise business as a whole, deeply leveling up the product value.

Reflections
Given more time I would like to delve deeper into the insights features which were cut due to development costs and technical hurdles. Allowing the users to easily understand and process their complex business data would increase both Union's value as a tool, and also the ease with which it's users could run their businesses.
Ultimately the final project that shipped fell short of my design goals, and given the chance I would love to polish the design even further.
